What is Resin Trap
1. Shape
2. Main Fittings
3. Main purposes
The Resin Traps are installed in the vacuum process between the mold and the vacuum pump to capture excess resin that enters the vacuum line before it can damage equipment. Resin traps are an integral part of all vacuum infusion and vacuum bagging processes.
Guide to Resin Trap
1. Usage in picture
Below picture exactly shows how resin trap connects with vacuum pump and mold during vacuum progress.
2. Usage in specific steps
Below are specific steps for resin trap instruction for your reference.
3. Usage in video
This video will give people a specific method about how to process resin infusion with vacuum pump & resin trap:

4. Warning
Below are key points which you need to take note during operation.
- In order improve the accuracy of the gauge, please leave the plug open for 10-15 minutes to allow the gauge to adjust to the ambient temperature and then return to atmospheric pressure.
- Do not exceed the maximum liquid level or be below the lowest level;
- As the air is removed from the vacuum bag, you should move the bag around and position it so that you move “spare”bagging film into the areas of the mould which need it.
- Experience will show you at which point in the infusion resin feed line should be clamped but a rule of thumb is to do this when resin is about 2/3 of the way through the part. Clamping the line too soon will mean that resin never fully infuses the part. Clamping it too late will result in lots of resin being sucked into the vacuum tube and catch pot.
- When the part is fully cured the pump can be turned off and then the vacuum bag cut away from the mould.
Comparison with Vacuum Chamber
1. Difference on shape
Different from vacuum chamber, in addition to a hole for gauge, there are two more holes on the lid for the resin trap: one is to connect with vacuum pump, the other one is to connect with mold
2. Difference on Fittings
Due to difference in shape, normally, resin trap will come with one more transparent hose compared with vacuum chamber
3. Difference on How to Use
Below is comparison about the usage for the resin trap and vacuum chamber.

Common Problems and Solutions for Resin Trap
How to separate resin from the resin trap more easily?
Be sure to apply mold release liberally to the inside of the unit and let it dry, otherwise your catalysed resin will become a permanent part of your tank.
What if the seal is not total during the resin infusion? What should I do?
If the seal is not total, please work your way around the bag, pressing the bag hard against the gum tape until it is.
How to tell if it is in a vacuum state before resin infusion?
Clamp off the vacuum pump and then close the vacuum pump for 15 minutes. If the pointer of the gauge in the lid of resin trap does not change, then we could confirm that it is full of vacuum.
How to tell if it is in a perfect seal?
The most practical way to know when you have a perfect seal(100% vacuum) is to look at the vacuum pump and see whether any oil vapour is being emitted by the pump. When the seal is total, the pumps sound will change slightly and oil vapour will stop being emitted by the pump.
Why does the resin become very hot? What should I do when I encounter this case during the operation? How to avoid such cases?
Reason: if large amounts of the mixed resin remain in the feed pot or accumulate in the catch pot, the resin can become very hot indeed.
What to do: there is nothing you can do and just keep an eye of the catch pot and wait for the exotherm to die down.
How to avoid:please try not to be too late clamping the resin feed line.

Warm Tips
- Be sure to apply mold release liberally to the inside of the unit and let it dry, otherwise your catalysed resin will become a permanent part of your tank.
- Please wear gloves and glass to protect ourselves.
- Keep an eye on the resin in the catch-pot if there is a lot in there cause lots of resin will cause exotherm dramatically.
